The story was retold by Chaucer. The day of Tiburtius is also known as "beginning of the summer half-year". Although the day officially falls on April 13th, in a broader sense it refers to the beginning of the year's warm weather, a period spanning roughly from March to October. This was a time of great persecution of Christians and soon Valerian and Tiburtius were arrested and sentenced to death. Their executioner was a man named Maximus, a Roman soldier.
